Not duty free

Featured Replies

Does anybody knows the rules about importing products from one Asean country to another. I am specifically talking about about alcohol and tobacco, where the duty has already been paid.

So this is NOT a DUTY free question!

I ordered a Jappo bottle of whiskey from Tokyo, using an online retailer, posted and delivered to my home in Thailand..postage was about 350 baht. I was expecting some sort of tax. But the good news is...there was no tax added...I dont know if this was a one off, or its due to the trade deal with Japan..once i finish this bottle i will find out:)

Think of the allowance you can bring back from the shops on a visa run to Cambodia. As far as I'm aware it's the same as your allowance when arriving from outside ASEAN, i.e. one litre of spirits or wine. I'd guess that trying to claim back duty paid in another ASEAN country from the Thai customs would be more trouble than it's worth.

According to my minimal research on the Thai customs website it does appear that alcohol (and probably tobacco) is duty exempt from ASEAN countries.

BUT

That doesn't mean you can just rack up at the airport with 10 bottles of whatever, you'll still need an import licence for both alcohol and tobacco if you are exceeding the duty-free allowance.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

I doubt that if you paid duty in an Asean country you won't have to pay import tax in Thailand.

The reason I ask the question is about 20 years ago I knew 2 guys who hired a van every year, They drove to France, visited the wineries, and stocked up with about 400 bottles each. This was 1 for every day of the year, plus a few spares for Xmas etc. They never had a problem on their return.

Now we all know that Asean is modeled on the EU, so it should be much the same.

It is very strange that even though my OP was quite specific, there are replies about importing from non Asean countries.

This thread is about inter Asean.

No, it doesn't have to be the same tax wise. Very dangerous assumption.
