KANCHANABURI: -- A woman of Karen origin was killed by a herd of angry wild elephants on Tuesday in the jungle in Kanchanaburi after being unable to escape their attack.

The victim was only identified by her first name, Chama. Her husband, Pujo, recounted to the police how they crossed paths with a herd of 30 elephants when they were taking a drink at a pond in the jungle in Thong Phaphum District.

The couple were walking home after work at the tapioca plant where they were employed in the early evening.

Build a huge fence around that piece of jungle  and let eco-tourists visit it to see elephants/tigers in the wild for 10.000 baht each in private jeeps.

It is extremely uncommon for people to be in the vicinity of a herd of wild elephants here in Thailand. There are simply not alot of them left. Some parks have a dozen, some a few dozen, some a few hundred. Usually the people are kept away from the elephants, at a safe distance. It does sound like this couple were wandering into an area they were not supposed to be. Most of the elephants are in the national parks. How many are left in the jungles, on their own, unprotected by the park wardens?

Sounds very suspicious.
