Wildlife forensic unit opened for DNA inspection of pet elephants

BANGKOK, 3 March 2017 (NNT) – The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has opened a wildlife forensic unit to verify the DNA inspection of pet elephants nationwide.

Wildlife forensic unit head Kanita Auitaworn opened the DNP’s wildlife forensic lab showing the process for the pet elephant DNA inspection as ordered by the National Council for Peace and Order, ensuring the transparency in all process.

The DNA inspection was ordered to identify each elephant, find the origin, and gather information to make a database, all to prevent the attempt for elephant owners to hold false pet elephant identification for wild elephant.

A mass blood test for 3,500 pet elephants has also been ordered. It will be the first time Thailand perform such a large scale elephant DNA test which is expected to be completed in September.

The test will also identify the snips sign which will provide the information on the elephant’s family trees, which will be the first time Thailand perform this intensive test by the DNP’s lab under cooperation with Chiang Mai University.

The DNP’s wildlife forensic unit, established in 2010, performs the testing of 1,000-3,000 samples in the last few years, especially including the mass pet elephant DNA tests and for Wat Pa Luang Ta Bua temple's tigers.
