Election commissioners cut short overseas trip

By The Nation

Four Election Commission (EC) members have decided to return to Thailand earlier than the original schedules following a controversy over their ongoing field trips in East Asian countries, an informed source said on Friday.

EC chairman Supachai Somcharoen and election commissioner Pravich Rattanapian are to fly from South Korea on Friday night, and commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn on Saturday.

Election commissioner Theerawat Theerarojwit is to head back from Japan on Saturday.

"Jarungwit said both trips were economically organised and did not cost more than Bt5 million. “The commissioners also needed to travel along, in order to honour the hosts in the hope that we got good hospitality in return,” he said."

1.  How many days was allocated for shopping?

2.  How many family members accompanied the commissioners (can't travel alone, too lonely.)

(1. and 2. Also meaning more room nights.)

3.  Where & when will the report be available including full details of specific lessons learned re. running elections?

Jarungwit said both trips were economically organised and did not cost more than Bt5 million.

WOW 5 Million for a couple days, 4 people?
Economically - that is a relative term.
No worries, the taxpayers have to pay it.
5 Million.

Controversy on a trip to research 'elections' from a country with no proposed elections in sight.

That should be the controversy right there.

Cushiest job in the world? An Election Commissioner at the time of a military government.

And I thought they were visiting North Korea, how stupid of me.

Surprised there wasn't a local election in Hawaii they could "investigate"?

The utter lack of shame in bilking the citizens is astonishing; whether it be for sons and nephews, jaunts to Hawaii, no-show NLA jobs.

Good thing they've granted themselves amnesty.

The EC trip was a pure fabrication as to purpose.

South Korea is a democratic republic with a presidential system whereby the president is directly elected by voters. Its election and form of government simply has no comparison to Thailand whether Thailand be led by a military junta or by a parliamentary system.

Chairman of the CDC Meechai in drafting the 2016 Thai constitution followed the principle that there was no system of government nor attendant electoral voting process in the world that was appropriate to Thailand. Thailand was unique.

So with the passing of the 2016 draft constitution by public referendum, there would be no point for the EC to make an official visit to South Korea - except maybe to see how far Thailand will become from ever being even a flawed democracy.

It's Game Over already for Thailand.

Where they looking for tips for the 2??? elections or just another taxpayer junket. Using the word controversy I guess the jig was up. Only when your on Mr. Prawit's level can you follow through and really make a splash.

Why they send them on election trips?

By the time there are elections in Thailand they will have died from old age already.
