Windows media player should manage to handle it.

For some downloads you might need Codex - if you download DIVX it will have that - and is a better media player than the windows one.

Or an other option is to use the "VLC media player".

If you don't have, you can download free here:

Indeed, VLC is an excellent tool and well worth downloading. Certain versions can be slightly unstable or unpredictable on some platforms (often because of memory limitations), it doesn't have a slick user interface or full drag-and-drop GUI, and the learning curve may be too steep for some.

But this is more than made up for by the fact that it will play nearly every A/V format in existence (including some very obscure proprietary formats like ATI-mp2) and allows for good quality conversions between formats as well as recording and streaming. VLC has allowed us to keep some of our legacy surveillance devices in service when even their own manufacturers no longer support their formats.

The AVI extension is just a general extension for many (hundreds) different video formats. It could be DivX, Indeo, Cinepac, Quicktime, mpeg, whatever. Generally, ANY player can play the file as long as you have the proper codec (coder/decoder) installed. Some players are a bit better at playing certain formats than others, some have more features and options, etc. etc., but windows' own media player will usually work.

I don't recommend downloading DivX, since it's become way too commercial for its own good, with advertisements and nags and whatnot. The included player is only so-so, compared to other completely free players. DivX is not the only codec out there, so just getting this won't play everything.

What I do recommend is to download K-lite mega codec pack and install it. It contains all the necessary codecs (including DivX) and a great free player (media player classic). It also has no ads or nags, completely free. You can download it from here:

K-lite codec pack is great !

If you install the large version (one above don't know) you'll also get the great GSpot utility.

Just start it, and drag and drop your avi/movie files onto it, and it will tell ya what codecs

etc are needed to play the file.

If the above K-lite package lacks this utility, you can always get it here:
