Thailand 49 spells it out. The worry is that if you are in say a car accident or the like, you might be faced with an ICU stay, similarly if you have a stroke - and it can be 100,00 baht per day at worst.

All very well to say, "well, I'll go home ot Oz/UK or where ever", but maybe the airlines will not take you. It is a Big Problem - it might never happen but......

Is it worth the risk? Many seem to think it is - and then, as some Posters have said, beg/whine/wail for a Fund to bail them out. That is Not Good.

I had a stroke in Bkk.

I was rushed to Bumrungrad Hospital where the treatment was first rate.

I was in hospital 4 days ( it was minor ) and released late on the 5th day and the total  bill was 230,000 baht.

I had Nomads Travel Insurance which covered it all.

But I wasnt allowed to fly for another week.

Then Nomads was insistent they fly me  home , so as to cancel my policy and put me in the hands of Medicare ( Travel  Insurance is only active when the Insured is O/S )

Now I have BUPA. I broke down the costs of my treatment  as an exercise in medical costs and decided I could cover easily  half of them myself.  Probably the lot , but I didnt want to do that - plus the BUPA card gets you straight into hospital . So I insured for a scenario of the Insurance Co. covering the other half.

BUPA  ( 'Saphire Package' IIRC ) costs me about 22,000 baht a year.

Of course they wont cover another stroke , but they contract to  continue to cover you ( if you can afford it ) for 'life'.

Its no good saying , "I'll just go home.."

How do you do that if mangled in an accident , or laid down with a stroke?

You must have something.

Bumrungrad demanded to know if I had Insurance before admitting  me  - they also put a 'hold' over the KBank card I had on me for 100k baht till my Insurance number came thru.

I now carry my BUPA card along with my Thai License always.

Even if you get the cheapest Insurance , get something with a card ! ( And get it thru an Agent who has your personal details on file )

How can you get at your "saved up emergency money" if you cant talk , or , like me with a stroke , cant remember your pin number?

Regarding health insurance there are several that will insure you before 75 and no cut off age . I turn 75 in June and found a reasonable insurer that will cover you for 8 major conditions including repatriation for around $A2000 per year plus others who are more expensive but still relatively affordable they will require a full medical report.

As far as the Aus. pension is concerned the poster who said it's not paid while O/S has obviously not read the Govt. Policy it's regulated by the time you have lived and worked in Aus. to comment on issues you know nothing about can be very confusing and worrying to others so please desist!!

Try FWD insurance I have them I am 60 cost me 36,000 baht per year and my Thai wife gets 200,000 baht if i die But best of all i get all my hospital paid if i have to go to hospital Work it cost about Aus dollars $1400 which is not bad  Now i can go to Pvt hospital Only catch is you actually have to spend night in hospital for them to pay all But i think its ok

Same here but I'm with AIA for inpatient only, VIP room at pvt hospital all expenses paid by insurance including meals, but like you said need to spend night in hospital to get the benefits. I'm 58yrs old and it cost ฿37,000 per year.
