I hear a million and one stories about vallium being freely available over the counter / strictly illegal without a Doctors letter.

Since giving up drinking I have had a few problems sleeping so I went yesterday to my local chemist to ask if they could help, putting the ball in their court as I did not want to be seen as trying to break the law. "A few vallium is what you need, there you are, just dont be stupid and take several at once" I was told. At no point did the staff look furtive and the shop is on a very busy main road.

Talking to a friend today, I was told the Chemist risked jail by selling them. Can anyone clear this one up for me once and for all? Legal or not?

Every trip to Thailand I'm asked to bring back some Vallium. I did buy some a while back and was not asked any questions (Samui) I also know people who buy them a regular basis.

As with many things in Thailand "I wont tell anyone if you dont" :D:o

If you start taking valium instead of drinking aren't you just replacing one drug with another (which is immensely difficult to stop taking)?

You need to be careful entering the UK. Valium is a Class C drug and the penalty for possession without a prescription is up to 2 years in gaol and an unlimited fine.

I do not intend to make a habit of it, believe me. But is it LEGAL?

I've no idea but I think that legality will be the least of your worries if you're not careful. Here's some guff on valium from Narconon:

"Valium is an antianxiety agent ( benzodiazepines. ) Used primarily for short-term relief of mild to moderate anxiety.

The habit-forming potential of Valium is high. It is possible to become dependent on Valium in only two weeks.

Valium in mainly available in tablets. The 2mg tablet is white, the 5mg tablet is yellow, and the 10mg tablet is blue.

Everyone's body is different but as little as half a pill of Valium when combined with depressants can lower your respiratory system enough to kill you. Taken in high doses Valium alone can kill you"

When you stop drinking suddenly, withdrawal symptoms often occur even in moderate drinkers. These can be minor symptoms like sleeplessness and restlessness and anxiety.

Valium (diazapam) can be used for alcohol withdrawal, but it should be used carefully. It has a long half-life, so a daily dose is often like 'topping-up'.

By all means use diazapam for 5-7 days, but there is no need to take it for any longer than that. It is highly addictive.

It is illegal to buy and possess diazapam in Thailand without a doctors note. However your chances of trouble are next to nil.

If I quit the beer after several weeks on the sauce, to start work for example I take chlordiazepoxide for 5 days, so I sleep well at night and get the Chang poison out my veins.

According to the top Pattaya lawer I talked to said if it is sold in the pharmacies (Vaallium or zanex)

it is legal as the pharmacy is not going to risk jail & losing their business for a nit noi profit.

My spouse & I have had both prescibed & know better than to buy from the hospital because they jack up the price. As far as the pharmacies go I have not one time every been asked for a prescription for sleeping aids as the Thai government looks as valium & zanex not in the same class as painkillers, till they change the class of narcotic it will be legal. I will occasional eat 2 as the valiums are 5mg. but as suggested use them cautiously as they are addicting(especially if you have an addictive personality)

Sleep well DON"T WORRY

If you start taking vallium/diazipam then be prepared to get hooked on it realy fast, most people on it kid themselves that its doing them good but in practice its use is only short term, your body becomes used to it and the only thing you have is the addiction, it took me 15 years to get off it, many people I met during that time are still on it, don't go into it lightly its not worth it.

Neither did I back in 95. I used it to come off drinking binges. I'd take 5 mg in the morning and then maybe 5 at night. Fast forward 5 years and I was taking 100 at night plus 100 during the day PLUS up to 2 large bottles of whiskey. God only knows why I am still alive.

BEWARE - it is very easy to become tolerant to this drug. In the longrun it's better to suffer a few sleepless nights for a year or so after quiting the booze. Check out the web forums about insomnia.

Quitting alcohol is a walk in the park compared to quitting benzodiazepines.

i have taken it on ocassion for up to a month , but have never found it to addictive i just dont take it when i dont need it often for many months or a year , i am not saying that it is not addictive just not to me

Pharmacies in Thailand were prohibited from selling valium without a prescription six/seven years ago.

Up until then I'd always buy a few tablets upon arrival in LOS, cut them in half and take half as a means of preventing jet lag by getting a knock out sleep on my first night there.

Some pharmacies still sell them illegally under the counter but most refuse.

I can well imagine them becoming very addictive.

Sometimes more than 200mg a day, when I had no booze. The diazepam here is not nearly as strong as in the UK, I'd guess about 70%.

Yeah it all comes down to the body being tollerent to vallium, As Neeranam said 100mg and even 200mg but he started on 5mg, you need to take more to get the same effect, changing the name to Diazepam worked for a while before people found out it was the same stuff, but in the early day's they tried to tell you Diazepam wassent so adictive, but the drug companys know its one of their best sellers !

I have taken valium off and on for 20 years and have never felt dependent on it. I might go several months without using it. All nights flights are my primary purpose for having it. But the occasional need to get to sleep quickly is second.
