BANGKOK: -- Thailand will on Tuesday finish responding to the United Nations Human Rights Committee’s 28 questions regarding the human rights situation in the country.

The inquiries are categorised into 11 groups:

- Constitutional and legal framework within which the covenant is implemented.

- Non-discrimination and equality.

- Violence against women.

- States of emergency.

- Right to life and prohibition of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Apparently they responded by saying abuse of people in Thailand has nothing to do with human rights abuse, just Thainess.

So would they please get of our backs and should they wish there will be free 6* holiday resorts at their disposal as a show of thanks. Of course complimentary and all inclusive.

Waste of time, has no value. Thailand will travel along it's own path without foreign interference.

It is going to be interesting to see how they try to defend a very long list of problems though.

Biggest book in the world on bullshitting isn't going to give them answers remotely good enough.

So Thailand, once again, will get slammed by the UN, it will be widely under reported, a few denials made, and trampling of the masses will continue.

Not a problem.

Prayut just consolidated the 11 groups into one group - Article 44.

Here's the UN announcement re Thailand's review, including links to documents and the end of the month (March 28) date for the UN's scheduled conclusions re Thailand. It also indicates the Thailand review sessions will be broadcast live via web TV.

What part of "all of our human rights violations are justified because we had to step in and stop a conflict that we, ourselves, participated in creating" don't "other countries" understand?

The report with the answers from the Thai government (see link given above) includes several pearls, i.e.

"Human rights activists are protected in the same way as all persons in Thailand under the law."

One could even think they have a sense of humour.....

Additionally a few quotes of very convincing arguments from the article in Khaosod, for you to enjoy

"Lt. Gen. Krisna Bovornratanaraks, Deputy Judge Advocate General at the Defense Ministry insisted that the military court is independent..."

“All [military] judges are also trained on human rights"

(About article 44) "What’s more, Rangsarit, a General Staff member Attached to the Directorate of Operations of the junta, stated that such absolute power existed in the past under 1959 and 1991 interim constitution"

"Knowing that the military regime is being watched, Krisna said on Tuesday that military officers are being trained to be sensitive to human rights"

It is so easy for Thailand to answer these various charges - because if one has no shame, no conscience, no decency or moral integrity, one can lie, spout nonsense, and say anything at all with a straight face. Thus:

Human rights abuses? No, we totally deny such claims. Thailand always respects human rights and has said so many times. Period.

Military trials for civilians? Thailand carries out all trials strictly in conformity with international norms and standards. We have said so numerous times. End of story.

And it will be the end of the story - as the 'international community' has not and will not take any serious, hard-hitting action against Thailand. At most - a verbal slap on the wrist - and more delays and prevarication.

That is THEIR shame and disgrace - the shame and disgrace of an 'international community' that turns a blind eye to huge and glaring injustice, committed on a national scale every minute of every single day ...

the answer, as soon as prostitution and jet ski scams are eradicated in Pattaya and we nab the invisible monk, we can continue with article 44 to provide the solution.
