Europe should treat both the USA and China with respect, cooperate where our interests align, but not become dependent on either. We also have to be careful about what technology we allow ourselves to depend on, whether it comes from China or the USA. The same goes for social media. We should protect our data, our infrastructure and ourselves from damaging algorithms designed to keep people hooked, angry or divided. Dependence is dependence, no matter which side it comes from. Ironically, Germany and Japan lost WWII and still became wealthy, stable and powerful countries. So simply being on the “winning side” is not much of an argument for blindly following anyone. Right now it is difficult for Europe to blindly follow the USA when it is acting increasingly recklessly and showing less consideration for its allies.
