Yingluck voices suspicion over renewed tax collection from Thaksin

BANGKOK: -- Former prime minister Ms Yingluck Shinawatra voiced suspicion over the government's renewed attempt to collect capital gain tax from her brother Thaksin Shinawatra and expressed hope that it was not abusing the existing laws for political gains, or for hunting those with different views.

Her comment came as she appeared at the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders this morning to stand trial for dereliction of duty charge in a case involving her rice pledging scheme.

The court heard testimonies from three of her witnessses today to defend the rice policy.

Before entering the courtroom, Ms Yingluck said when asked for comment on the tax collection, the Shin Corporation share sale (to Temasak Holding) had finished after the Supreme Court had handed down a ruling to confiscate 46 billion baht assets from her brother.

She said she had no idea what laws that allowed this  government to reclaim the tax.

However she said she was hopeful that the government would not use the laws for political gains, or for hunting those who have different views.

Article 44 / military law is not put into place to create hope, but rather to suppress those who might have different views.

Well, if one finds it 'suspicious' that a government (tries to) collect capital gain tax - especially to that extent ... what more is there to say then?
Keywords: unknown concept ...?

if I were a Shinawatra I would just take what I could and migrate to Dubai or Australia.  Heck Australia even has a huge history of taking in criminals - its almost a prerequisite.  The Junta wont stop until every last one of them is penniless and gone.

No, to prosecute people who have been abusing the system and couldn't be touched because of their wealth.

Oh please, you are going to usurp power from a legitimate government, subjugate an entire population just to go after a few people, ruin the business climate to keep international investment away and thwart efforts to bring crafted beer to Thailand ?  Wow, you are right.  That is the less than nimble thinking that has a grip on Thailand now.

The junta has had since the beginning of 2014 to collect these taxes.  Waiting until the last minute is their problem and looks bad or political.

well she got one thing right, she has no idea, I doubt she ever has. She did everything big brother told her too when she was the defacto leader and is now in the middle of it all folding around her due to it but she is still showing her total lack of intelligence with stupid comments like this. Guess the thought of any shins paying back all the money they have taken from the thai people is just too much for them, lets hope the courts do the right thing and make them pay for their greed.

A legitimate government - one who lied, ignored the law, threatened judges, tried to whitewash a fugitive career criminal wanted for jumping bail to avoid a prison sentence and 15 plus other serious cases and then allowed their militia to murder and attack people who protested their open contempt and arrogance of the Thai people?

The Shins wealth, vast before, increased massively under the PTP regime. Thaksin bragged about it to Forbes as the family went up in the Worlds Richest.

Now how many other people's wealth grew by similar percentages during their reign?

They brought themselves down by their too open shows of greed, which made them appear too arrogant. A lot gets tolerated here, but then rubbing everyone's noses in it whilst lording it up at public expense went way too far.

Spot on, but bear in mind some posters would not know the difference between sh1t and clay, even if they tasted it.

So you are saying it is okay to marginalize all Thais so the government can go after the Shins ?  Are two coups and time wasted worth all this trouble ?
