NLA president defends swift action on Surapong impeachment

BANGKOK: -- Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, president of the National Legislative Assembly, insisted on Friday that the NLA adhered strictly to its duty over the impeachment of former Foreign Affairs Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, in line with its assigned authority and normal parliamentary procedures.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has accused Surapong, a key Pheu Thai Party politician, of malfeasance and dereliction of duty under the Penal Code for reissuing two passports to former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Thaksin’s passports had been revoked in 2009 by the Democrat-led government of Abhisit Vejjajiva on the grounds that the former PM was deemed to be damaging the country while living in exile abroad.

The agency then implicated him for a criminal offence as well as impeachment, kicking off the parliamentary process.

Pornpetch said after the case was officially opened in Parliament on Friday that the NLA followed normal procedures after officially receiving the case from the NACC.

If it did not proceed with the case, the body itself would violate the constitution, he said, rejecting the notion that the NLA acted hastily because of Surapong’s association with Thaksin.

Did Surapong acted hastily because of his association?

Amazing how the wheels of justice can be turned so quickly for some...for others less so,

I'm sure it's just a coincidence.

I love the smell of reconciliation in the morning, it smells like VICTORY.

To be fair, the former FM and his cousin the former PM were asked several times by the Ombudsman to explain why this happened. They delayed, delayed, delayed and finally ignored the questions.

They could have answered at any time and killed the topic but chose not too. Now what might that suggest (clue: some people think they are above the law).

Yes it showed how much respect they had for the law.. and that it needed a coup to bring them to justice because they thought themselves untouchable above the law.

For most of this century Thaksin owned/controlled political parties have been in government. Whilst in office they were untouchable and above the law.  Many people in that position don't know when to stop and it's usually the excesses that bring them down.

Yes.. no crimes need to be invented.. they broke the law plenty of times because they thought they could get away with it and now their followers are crying. All so avoidable if they just followed the law.. really everyone breaking it should be punished.

Unfortunately that is not how it works in Thailand.. they all break the law.. but only get punished once they are out of power.  Then at that time they cry its political.. while the only political part was that they got away with it in the first time.

You shouldnt complain about this case being processed quickly but about the rest of the cases processed too slowly
