George Osborne, who lost his job as British Chancellor after the EU referendum in June, was appointed editor of London's Evening Standard, the newspaper's owner Evgeny Lebedev said on Friday.

"I am proud to have an editor of such substance, who reinforces The Standard's standing and influence in London," Lebedev tweeted.

"And whose political viewpoint - socially liberal and economically pragmatic - closely matches that of many of our readers."

Osborne, who remains a lawmaker, joined investment group BlackRock Inc as an advisor last month.

"I am proud to be a Conservative MP, but as editor and leader of a team of dedicated and independent journalists, our only interest will be to give a voice to all Londoners," Osborne said in a statement.

"We will be a fearless paper fighting for their interests."

Osborne, 45, became Britain's youngest Chancellor in more than 100 years when he was appointed in 2010. He argued that Britain needed to cut spending and was a prominent campaigner for Britain to remain in the European Union.

He's going to be a very busy boy. Will city coke prices rise or fall as a result?

Edited by RuamRudy

Guess the extra cash will come in handy for him and he will certainly be able to find time from his other part time job as he is only getting paid £650,000 pa by Blackrock for 48 days work per year.

I think the name of the paper should be changed to "The Evening Low Standard".

yea let's appoint a Tory MP!!!   Standard Nonsense

From controlling the nation's budget to vetting reporters' expense sheets. . . how the mighty have fallen.

Hopefully, the ex-public school twit who imposed his disastrous austerity policy on the nation will be on a zero-hours contract, with no paid holidays or sick leave - and, of course, no job security.

Without doubt Osborne takes the biscuit for greed

nah.

He doesn't hold a candle in the greed stakes compared to Tony B'liar.

After he quit being PM he was officially confirmed as Middle East envoy for the United Nations, European Union, United States, and Russia. Blair originally indicated that he would retain his parliamentary seat after his resignation as Prime Minister came into effect; however, on being confirmed for the Middle East role he resigned from the Commons by taking up an office of profit.

There is a lot more about him on Wikipedia here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Blair#Post-premiership_.28since_2007.29

George Osborne will be fine as the editor of the London Evening Standard, as Chancellor, he was great at making sh*t up.

I'll bet Teresa is worried ?
