Toxic rice wine kills three in Cambodia

Featured Replies

Mondulkiri police are trying to find the source of rice and herbal wine poisoning which killed three people and led to nine being sent to the hospital emergency department. Deputy provincial police chief So Sovann said yesterday that the suspected poisoning happened on Friday evening in Pu Tung village.

All three who died were men. One woman was among those sent to hospital. Mr. Sovann said: “They attended the funeral of a villager and drank 30 liters of rice and herb wine.  “After the incident, our officers including doctors, Health Department and Camcontrol went to inspect the scene.

“We could not confirm the real cause, whether it came from the high level of alcohol or they drank it excessively. So we’re taking the wine to the laboratory.”  Provincial leaders have been pushing for the cause to be identified as soon as possible. The nine with vomiting symptoms of wine poisoning have been recovering gradually.
