Dealing with Thai immigration

Featured Replies

I got particularly complicated case. Hopefully you got some advise for me.
I cross to Thailand by land from Malaysia  and at the Thai border officer asked me for 20000 bath for visa, which I  already got in my passport .So I obviously didn`t pay( I know they give a try sometimes ,especially when you cross by land , but then let it go). So at the end he stamped my visa and said "Go". So I thought is all fine ,until I was checking in into my hotel and they said that I don`t have my stamp: dated when I got in the country and how long I allowed to stay here . Now it seems like I`m staying  in Thailand illegally .
I went to Chiang Mai immigration office yesterday, but there wasn`t much help at all . They just kept saying that I should go  almost 2000 km. back to the border which I crossed .But what will happen when I get there I got no answer .
Any ideas  how I can sort this case ?

The 20k is to show you have the means to support yourself and not any sort of payment. They've recently started asking for this again. Looks like you've upset him and in-kind he's caused you hassle. Probably have to get back down there to try to sort it. Be humble.

If you do not have a stamp you will need to go back. They will reference your exit stamp from Malaysia and then back date the day you entered Thailand. As well your arrival date will start from that date.

I don't understand why they are telling you to go all the way back to the border if you have a valid visa, exit stamp from Malaysia, and an entry stamp (undated) to Thailand. Usually date errors are dealt with at any immigration office. If you have no joy in CM you could try another office.

Maybe you could try and get help from an immigration lawyer or agent in CM.

If the error can't be fixed by an immigration office you will have to go back to the same border crossing and they should fix the date error.

The IO was not asking for a 20K bribe and could have denied you entry if you didn't show the cash. Make sure you have 20K if you go back to that border.

I don't think he has any stamp without a date on it. He has no entry stamp at all.

That's not my understanding of the OP.

I think the IO has stamped the passport with an entry stamp but forgot to date it.

I go with Ubonjoe, the visa gets stamped "Used" and the normal entry stamp with the permission to stay date has been completely omitted.

Nice bit of revenge from the angry IO, perhaps.

Which border checkpoint was this - Sadao?  They are known to fish for 200 Baht bribes to enter.  Meeting the requirements, instead of paying him a bribe to skirt the requirements (as expected), may have made him angry.
