March 21, 20179 yr Did anyone have such problem before ? Last week, the doctor told me my left ear drum had a tiny hole, and my right ear had blood stains. Doctor said that is because I did "stand on head", a yoga practice, and she said I should not do that anymore. But I think the reason is one week before that, I took an one hour flight by Nok air. The plane landed very fast and my ears had sharp drilling pain (i had a bad cold then and nose was blocked a lot )... I have been doing "stand on head" for one year now, each time only 15 seconds. And during the past year, I also took several long distance flight, no problem at all... It's really confusing . Am still doing 'Stand on Head' now. Next Monday will go to hospital for recheck. Searched a lot on web. Seems position change will not have much impact on ear pressure......

March 21, 20179 yr What you describe is a perforated ear drum. It occurs when there is an imbalance between pressure in the inner ear and pressure outside it. Often happens in ear infections and can also occur when there is a sudden change in air pressure, as in air travel (barotrauma). I have never heard of it occurring due to a yoga position, and it is hard to envision how it could. Ear drum perforations usually, but not always, heal by themselves. It is important to avoid getting water in the ear until it has healed, so when showering put in an ear plus or cotton ball and use a shower cap. Should also avoid blowing your nose until it heals. This is a good overview http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/ruptured-eardrum/home/ovc-20265959
March 21, 20179 yr Am still doing 'Stand on Head' now To what end? Humans are a funny bunch. If I head an ear issue, the last thing I'd be doing is anything to increase the pressure in that area.
March 21, 20179 yr I had similar ear problems some 30 years back. Was flying back to the UK from West Africa, had a very heavy cold and by the time I landed at Heathrow both my ears were fully blocked and I could hear very little. Still same problem after a couple of days so was referred to an ENT consultant who gave my ears a good clear-our. The doctor advised that one of my eardrums had perforated but, luckily, had healed over. However he indicated that I should be careful if flying with a heavy cold in the future as the eardrum would always be in a weakened state and could result in a high degree of deafness if perforated again. As it is my hearing in that ear is affected, but only marginal - except when it suits me!! So, it is possibly due to flying with a heavy cold, rather than the yoga.
March 25, 20179 yr so, your questions is ? should i continue SOH yoga? or maybe..... how long will it take to heal till its safe to do SOH? or which is more likely cause: I'd easily go with the airplane. however, that said generalized intercranial pressure, will temporary cause some increase blood BP to the head , I would think , however, the head being so close to the heart, it probably is pretty good at regulating that. does BP in the head effect, the inner ear pressure, possibly indirectly, enough to cause a puncture. maybe lost in translation , dr. being conservative meant to cut out the SOH for a while just to make the healing go faster ........... however doubtful the physiology of the healing might be.....:)
March 27, 20179 yr Author Thanks! I totally agree with your analyse. Today, I have an appointment for recheck. Curious to see the result. I am still doing Sand on Head these days. Because after reading a lo online, I feel 99% reason is the horrible landing of that small airplane. I only do SOH once a day, about 15 seconds . Also do warming up before SOH, and deep breathing during SOH. Normally, too high inner cranial pressure will cause bleeding inside head, or retinal detachment, but should not be high enough to case an ear drum puncture.
March 29, 20179 yr Author Hi All, I had rechecked my ears this Monday. The tiny hole is healed by itself :))) ....And I've found out that massaging the neck area of Eustachian tube before landing helps a lot to ease ear pain. I had sharp drilling ear pain when I flew BKK to Mae Sot, but on the flight back, I massaged hard and felt almost no discomfort in ears!!!! Have a nice day!
