BANGKOK: -- The Thai Health Promotion Foundation will demand clarification from the Fiscal Policy Office over its reported plan to cut the foundation’s budget in half and give the money to the Elderly Fund.

“We support care for the elderly but such a big cut of budget will seriously hurt our operation,” ThaiHealth assistant manager and spokesman Prakasit Kayasit said. “We can’t agree to that.”

He spoke after it was reported that the FPO said only Bt2 billion would be left for ThaiHealth and any baht beyond that would go to the Elderly Fund.

At present, ThaiHealth receives an annual budget equivalent to 2 per cent of the so-called sin taxes. For the current fiscal year, ThaiHealth received more than Bt4 billion.

“News reports suggest that the FPO expects that whatever is beyond Bt2 billion will go to the elderly fund. But that’s not what we have agreed to do,” Prakasit said. “Although we intended to accept the ceiling for our budget, we expect the ceiling to be Bt4 billion, not Bt2 billion.

The draft amendment of the Act governing ThaiHealth calls for a Bt4 billion annual ceiling for the organisation. The proposed amendment will soon be submitted for public hearings.

Thailand is considered an ageing society. The government provides a monthly subsidy of between Bt600 and Bt1,000 to the elderly.

...and another two fingers up to the general public. 'We are taking that money and buying submarines with it instead. Got a problem with that?'

Edited by baboon

it's political not practical.

ThaiHealth spreads a small amount of its funding to local groups that the junta doesn't like.  You know, like local groups that do great things in their communities but believe in human rights and justice, too...

Bringing happiness to the people? Submarine. Just remember the white elephant!

Public healthcare is going down the toilet world wide. Guess where the money is going yes military expenditures. Before long there will be no people left to defend they will have all succumbed to disease and sickness.

Why don't they use their brains(if they have any)and collect taxes from all the people who don't pay tax now. They would have enough money for the Healthcare  & elderly and social security . C'mon now ,do the right thing for you're country .

3 for 2 submarines!  Give credit where credit is due.  It's not impossible that we will hear a 4 for 3 deal, with a truckload of diesel thrown in for good measure

Thai Health Promotion Foundation.  Guessing they  will  do  the  same little  with half  the  funding.

Thai  health  will still inundate  every hospital regardless !

Come on Mr. PM. Bring more happy health to the citizens! Maybe buy 4 submarines!
