Pheu Thai calls for 'independent, non-partisan' reconciliation panel

Pheu Thai calls for 'independent, non-partisan' reconciliation panel
By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Pheu Thai Party submitted a letter to defence permanent secretary General Chaichan Changmongkol on Wednesday calling for the disbandment of three reconciliation committees and the setting up of an independent panel instead.

And once the independent panel formed a conclusion for the reconciliation process, the super-committee – or Por Yor Por – should abide by it, former coalition leader Virot Pao-in said.

The letter detailing the proposal was submitted by Virot, acting leader of Pheu Thai Party.

Pheu Thai said in the letter that reconciliation building should serve the national interest and should be carried out by an independent, non-partisan panel trusted by the public.

It said the panel should be free of influence and adhere to the rule of law as well as give an opportunity equally to academics, the mass media, civil society, and those affected by past conflicts to express their thoughts.

The opinion gathering should not be just another ritual, it said.

The party also said no one should be discriminated against and the conclusion of the reconciliation process should come from mutual agreement that considered human dignity based on democratic principles as well as the rule of law. The conclusion of the process should not be imposed on conflicting parties against their will.

Pheu Thai said conflict resolution should not only end the conflict but appease affected parties to make mutual forgiveness possible.

It reiterated that an independent panel was necessary for this task as the current committees were dominated by officials answerable to the National Council for Peace and Order.

Besides setting up an independent panel and respecting the conclusion it arrived at, Virot said the implementation of the conclusion should be assured while the regime should foster a democratic atmosphere and allow freedom of expression.

If freedom of choice is ever re-established and Army participation in politics is made illegal, reconciliation will happen naturally.

Putting aside the issue of whether the PTP could care less about any type of reconciliation, the simple fact is that they make a fair point.

The military are quite simply not independent or neutral in this. They have been, are and will continue to be heavily involved in the countries politics, and its political problems. On top of that, it is exacerbated by having someone who many believe has been heavily involved in the military actions in politics (Overt & Covert) over the past decades as the person charged with leading the process makes it even more difficult to comprehend that it is actually a serious attempt at improving things. This guy lest we forget was even in the previous Democrat Government!

The PTP make a fair point on this, whether for the right reasons is debatable. The fact that the NCPO put Prawit in charge of the process also makes it difficult to believe their is any sincerity on the NCPO behalf. In fact it is so obscure putting him in charge its like they are taking the piss.

Admittedly finding an acceptable neutral person would be difficult.

Independent, Non partisan, then the same shit when the

get back in power, they cannot help themselves.

The point itself is fair. But independent? PTP would probably be the first one's to over the panel members some nice pastries to nibble on!

And that's the reality. Despite what they say all sides are out for themselves and the pie is just so big and delicious, and so rewarding that each side doesn't want to share.

If a truly independent neutral person came to a conclusion that PTP didn't like, based on past behavior, they would refuse to accept it.

And exactly the same could be said for the army and Democrats.

A recent FB memory brought up a post about a vote in parliament. They were guaranteed to win, and they were caught cheating. It's like the Fox and the scorpion. It's in their nature.

As long as a Government is allowed to pass legislation behind closed doors you encourage corruption. Government open to Public scrutiny must behave more ethically. The demands of Pressure Groups and the greedy must be subordinate to the needs of the majority
