BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Commerce will consult with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to upgrade fresh markets in Bangkok with emphasis on cleanliness and hygienic conditions in order to lure back shoppers who have increasingly turned to modern trade such as department stores.

Deputy Commerce Minister Sonthirat Sonthichirawong said Thursday that fresh markets or Talad Sod are in need of development although the conditions of many of them have improved lately.

He noted that shoppers now have more options to buy food and many of them have switched to shop in department stores which, in the long run if the trend continues, retailers and vendors in the fresh market will not survive.

Citing a new examples of things to be upgraded in fresh markets, the deputy minister said that the stalls that sell meat need to have glass partition to keep away flies.

Maybe they should put emphasis on the produce actually being fresh and not laced with pesticides.

Wow that is ingenious. Something the rest of the world have known for the last 60 years. How about keeping it in cool temperatures as meat lying in the sun all day looks less appealing by the minute.

Get first rid of all the formaldehyde and pesticides and I will use the fresh markets again.

The smells of these markets are usually off putting in most countries.  As a Farange, you always wonder if you getting a good deal.

Where will all the Rats and Cockroaches go, they need a home too !

Yes those markets can be filthy, chopping up fish/meat/frogs so customers get splashes on them isn't 2017.

Very low crappy umbrella's with steel pins sticking out is very dangerous.

Not showing retailprices (especially of the more expensive produce) is very annoying.

No good parkinglots and huge congestion is also no good.

Loads of motocy taxi's at the entrance and blocking the roads is soooo 3rd world.

Very narrow paths is also not relaxed.

Boiling hot oil right next to customers is very dangerous..

So i 'll stick with supermarkets.....much better...let them go bankrupt they will overcharge me anyway.

Always thinking small. Upgrade fresh markets to stimulate the economy! what a joke.

And where does the upgrade take place? Bangkok of course the hub of Thailand.

Monsanto, rules ok.

Thailand is far behind the developed world.

We need less markets and more huge supermarkets who pricefight eachother...

And stop the cheating, i bought 1 kg frozen barramundi from Makro which contains 250 ml of water in the bag. That's such an old trick i wished there were more huge shops.

Open the markets and let Aldi come here, life will become much cheaper for ALL and Thailand might become a cheap holidaydestination again.

All those wetmarkets cause a lot of trafficcongestion as well, we need huge trucks supplying the huge supermarkets..not hundreds of small pickuptrucks blocking the roads.

Thailand has to grow up! It's time to scale up the economy and do everything big to compete with the rest of the world.
