Defence Ministry is developing its own bomb-defusing robots

BANGKOK: -- The Defence Ministry’s national defence technology institute has been developing its own bomb-defusing robots since last year with the hope that they will be deployed for service in the next three years.

General Sompong Mukdasakul, the institute director, said Thursday that the prototype robots developed by the institute were capable of defusing bombs.

In the past several years, Thailand has spent a substantial amount of budget in acquiring bomb-defusing robots and in their maintenance, said the general, adding that he thought Thailand itself has the capability and technology to develop the robots as witnessed by the robots developed by university students.

They're still trying to perfect a sophisticated robot that it is capable of swinging a large hammer.  This way the robots will be dumbed-down enough for Thai law enforcement to use.

Well given this countries known level of technical expertise then I suspect they will either be a copied technology from elsewhere or else they will be as useless as a eunuch at an orgy

Don't forget to charge the batteries! :w00t:

These gadgets don't really "defuse" bombs, they are however a means of getting a variety of sensors, video and others, up close to the bomb to examine it without a human having to get up close. They also employ devices to "disrupt" the bomb, or can be used to initiate a controlled explosion to destroy it. They don't defuse it, that is done by a human.
I hope "defuse" is an error in translation...

They will probably be as much use as the bomb detectors, they bought a few years ago.

Thailand wins the international robot-contests every year recently and in any country....

And have you seen the white guys on the pic?

What have the Foreigners lined up got to do with the robot development,

prospective customers ?

regards worgeordie

I invasion lots of Oops with this robot, and anybody with more brains

than this robot be wise to stay away as far as possible when trying

to defuse a bomb.....

Maybe they are contractors who provided the hardware & software technology to enable the Institute to "design" the robots?

Notice only the three white guys have tags - not from Thailand?

No. They ARE the actual robots developed by the department, while the devices you see in the foreground are the ones previously purchased from abroad.

Hopefully they dont buy their operating system at Pantip :sleepy:

Prayut or Prawit should to given the honour of testing the device in a real situation.

We are talking about explosive spectrographic detection devices. Not toys

The robots they build for that contest can save lives, it's not a toyshow...what are you thinking?

General Sompong Mukdasakul,  said Thursday that the prototype robots developed by the institute were capable of defusing bombs.

In other words, they can cut wires connected to a bomb and they use camera's mounted on robots for that. The robotarm has a cuttingdevice to cut the wires.  Maybe it can also grab/pull parts out of the bomb but it's nothing more/less than a robotic arm.

I have several homebuild robots/toys who can do the same plus much more totally automatic.

There's no difference between toys and robots...They are just automated machines on a platform controlled by remote control...As soon as they can do it fully automatic they are robots but they won't use that for bombs.

Well as you think the Thai toys are as good, or will be as good as the rest of the world's, , just you go and stand within 100 mtrs of an IED when a Thai toy robot is in use !!!

Mate the Thai won the robotcompetitions in Japan/Germany and where-ever they keep them....for many years...You think they can bribe the jury there???

And again, they are just rc-tools, they don't do anything automatic without an operator behind the controls. Just like in the West.

And why do you think those white guys are standing there? I bet they sold them parts or help them building robots. They're not there for the show.

A made in USA robot which can cut bombwires costs about 10-30k us$...the parts are cheap though so the Thai can build them much cheaper and learn a lot from that.

I bet they want to build robots who can detect mines (by sensors or whatever technology) so they can defuse and remove them...

But Thailand wants to become a player in the robotic market worldwide so they have to start somewhere.

Electronic parts are sold in Chinatown but those vendors can't speak a word english and are very expensive...that puts Thailand behind many other countries though. It WAS not even possible to walk around in Chinatown but that's improved lately. It would be much better if they moved the whole electronics market to Phantip though since Chinatown is an abandoned corner of BKK.

I will repeat myself for the benefit of clarity. If anybody think those Thai toys are so good then please stand within a 100 mtrs  of an IED when the Thai toy is in use.  The same applies to bibing any jury, if they are that confident and unbribed let them stand there also !!

The fact of the matter is that Thai's are totally incapable of developing anything hitec on their own

Guess what? They just (yesterday or so) came into the top 10 for medical holidays.....

I agree the Thai are very bad with technology but there's no way to cheat on those robot competitions so they must be doing something vely good as well...

Here is a video of the Robocon2016....even the hosts don't speak english but they have teams from all over Asia.

Soon the whole world will speak Thai....:sorry:

And look, they even wear helmets during the contest!

But those things all look like toys compared to this from Boston...

I thought the Thai conscription would suffice, 4 weeks training and go defuse that bomb son....oops, another death, cheaper than building a machine .

does this mean they are getting rid of the blindfold, earmuffs and tapping feet methods:cheesy:

Ah , so you served in the infantry as well?

wow, and next they will develop their own nuclear bomb..........

Please, please, don't give people ideas!
