BANGKOK: -- A couple were injured after they jumped down from their 4-storey auto parts shophouse in Pathum Thani that engulfed five connected units early Friday.

Police said the fire started at 4 am at Udomsup shop that are made of five-unit on a shophouse row on Pathum-Tiwanon Road in Tambon Klong in Mueang district.

Ten fire engines rushed to the scene and managed to control the blaze at 7:30 am after four units of the Udomsup shop and another connected unit of another shop were engulfed.

While fire fighters were trying to control the blaze, Prateep Udomratanawit, 40, and his wife jumped down from behind their shop. They were injured and rushed to the Pathum Thani Hospital.

A neighbour, Krit Jaichalad, 36, told police that he heard a strange sound and came out to see the fire raging. He shouted to the shop owner but no one answered. Later, he saw the couple jump down the building.

Police said the fire spread very fast because the shop sold engine oil and plastic parts of vehicles. Sounds of explosions were heard now and then while fire fighters were trying to put it out.

The fire caused about Bt10 million in damage, police said.

The fire fighting caused heavy traffic congestion on the road.

Went past at 8.00 am this morning on the way to Tammassat University Hospital. Tailback was horrendous and the extent of the damage severe but even as the firemen were damping the scene down an electrical crew were stringing up new electrical cables for those damaged in the blaze. Glad to hear nobody died in what appeared an horrific house fire.
