April 9, 20179 yr i don't think it will be back to normal until tuesday the 18th. i'm assuming there will be some people still going on monday.
April 9, 20179 yr If you refer to the airport (BKK)? 13th and 14th will not be back to normal in any way. Outbound domestic flights (Thai Smile) from BKK completely full on 13th. Heavy inbound on Sunday 16th. As others said: don't expect relaxation until 18th. Bangkok city streets/traffic should be somewhat empty/quiet during 13 to 15 except the party spots. Empty streets in Bangkok during Songkran, a yearly event.
April 9, 20179 yr I believe in BKK it will finish for the most part on Sunday. I believe most private companies are back at work on Monday 17th, i know we are.
April 9, 20179 yr At present we are back to work on Monday 17th. But in the past if the 3 day Songkran holiday impinges on a weekend the government has made a (usually last minute second retrospective) declaration that the Monday is a substitution day. "I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

My (Thai) business calendar shows Mon. 17th as a compensatory holiday.
April 9, 20179 yr The question is, when am I safe commuting by walking/BTS/MRT as usual, as opposed to having to take a cab? Church on Sunday? Work on Monday? Edited April 9, 20179 yr by Katia

There are many public holidays through the year but private companies only pick and choose about 13-15 days to give. They don't give every public holiday. I believe this year many private companies have not given that day, so they have one in hand over normal years when it comes to working out whether they may be an extra one on the new King's birthday etc.

Yes you should be fine. My recollection of previous years in bkk is that the water throwing stops at the end of the third day (15th). Sunday and Monday may be holidays bit should be dry.
April 9, 20179 yr Author Thanks for the info, i may plan my arrival for after the weekend then just to miss all the nonsense ( hopefully ).
April 10, 20179 yr I went past Mo Chit My today and it is already rammed. And I mean rammed, and that was morning time, not rush hour. People leaving already in their droves.
April 10, 20179 yr During songkran here in BKK is a great time to be a motorist. Streets virtually empty.

Agreed... its a great time to be in Bkk, to nip across the city, go out to restaurants without having to deal with the traffic... Songkran in Bkk is one of my favourite times of year in Bangkok, along with those cool couple of weeks we encounter in Jan. In fact - Traffic is the one single irritation I have with Bangkok, otherwise an amazing city. I'd like to see a congestion charge bought in much like other major cities.

April 14, 20179 yr Extremely unlikely, consider that it hasn't been "normal" since the early 1960s. This city becomes more and more abnormal by the day. It's like a modern-day Sodom & Gomorrah.
