Thailand prepared to become world jewelry hub

BANGKOK, 24 April 2017 (NNT) - The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT) has prepared to drive Thailand into becoming a world jewelry hub.

GIT Director Phornsawat Watthanakul disclosed that the GIT has prepared measures to push Thailand to be the world’s jewelry hub and that the cabinet has recently agreed on reducing import duties on gems and jewelry.

The operation plan will focus on the supply of raw materials from East Africa and ASEAN member countries such as Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia.

The GIT has also cooperated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to organize trade cooperation especially with Mozambique and Madagascar as the world’s major sources of gems and developed human resources and knowledge of new production pattern through research by universities and related organizations.

The acronym alone inspires heaps of confidence.

hmmm.... those things in which Thailand is a hub, or even only recently became an actual hub.... it seems quite quiet on those things...

world's biggest automotive airbag fabric plant? Thailand, 2014 and counting. and last year hit many new record highs in airbag exports... no news. even with a down vehicle market.

yawn. or maybe more like.... jewelry is something a Little Person can do with a few weeks or days training... and nylon 6,6 only employs a few thousand workers.

so we get the wannabe hubs.... but not the real ones. kind of backwards? no. cultural..... but only with a bit of a stretch of the definition in English.... which is also... you guessed it.... cultural.

I can see it now    !   ...............

welcome to Thailand folks ....   off to Pattaya for some boom boom and then to the jewelry shop for a nice rock ....:cheesy:

It's been the hub of pearl necklaces for decades. :coffee1:

Hub of hot air!

Every month they are going to become the hub of something. Has Thailand ever successfully become the hub of anything? Next week will be crackdown week.

I fear I see a flaw in this cunning plan. Where Gems are concerned, the buyer needs to be able to trust the seller, not to sell him fakes. Not quite sure that such an environment exists here.

Is there a word missing.....?

Thailand to become 'World Jewelry Nicking Hub'!

Edited by jacko45k

I'm in the market for a LARGE blue diamond . . . .

The ladyboys of Pattaya are an authority on gold chains! Below market price for those interested! Hubba hubba!

Hubs are front desks announcements for increasing prices.

Hoppers are limited to 2 visits a year.

So any hub is doomed to fail.

As prepared for everything else announced.... Half-assed, if at all.

All the things that it is a genuine hub of are the same things they're trying to get rid of here.

maybe they are preparing to sell off the saudi crown jewels. will have to be done before the army or TAT say selling jewels is illegal.

Yes we certainly have plenty of hubs, but no wheels, ie nothing is rolling around the hub!

They have been saying that Thailand wants to be a Jewelry Hub for such a long period of time.

The Top 15 countries in the world are:

China: US$18.6 billion (19.1% of total jewelry exports)

Switzerland: $11.1 billion (11.3%)

India: $10 billion (10.2%)

United States: $9.7 billion (9.9%)

Hong Kong: $6.7 billion (6.9%)

Italy: $6.3 billion (6.4%)

United Kingdom: $6.2 billion (6.4%)

France: $4.5 billion (4.6%)

Turkey: $3.8 billion (3.8%)

Thailand: $3.6 billion (3.7%)

Singapore: $2.8 billion (2.9%)

United Arab Emirates: $2.7 billion (2.7%)

Malaysia: $1.7 billion (1.7%)

Germany: $1.7 billion (1.7%)

Japan: $1.6 billion (1.7%)

Thailand and Singapore are the Jewelry Hub of ASEAN for the past 5 years.

Thailand had its chance many years ago to be the gem and jewelry hub of the world, but China, and particularly Hong Kong do a much better job with Trade Shows and exhibitions whilst Thailand languishes on missed opportunities.

The days of Thai cutting and polishing leadership are also coming to an end, if they aren't already.

Zero chance of revitalizing Thailand as a major jewelry hub. Momentum is long gone.

Please just stop it...!
