BANGKOK: -- The Mental Health Department has expressed concern over the increasing trend of online live streaming of suicide incidence which may lead to copycat practice, particularly, among youngsters who are most vulnerable.

The department head Dr Boonruang Trairuangvorawat noted that online live streaming could not be censored or edited while it was on air, hence, it could encourage copycat practice, especially among minors.

He suggested netizens not to share live streaming of suicides and to shut off the live broadcast to prevent youngsters from watching them and, worse, to emulate the suicide practice.

According to the 2015 suicide statistics collected by the Khon Kaen Ratchanakarin psychiatric hospital, there are an average of 350 suicide cases each month or one case every two hours and suicide rate among Thai males which is four times higher than the rate of females.

"The Mental Health Department has expressed concern over the increasing trend of online live streaming of suicide incidence..."

Here's a novel idea. How about investing money in a real threat, suicide and other mental health issues, instead of submarines, which will be used to fight imaginary foreign enemies, and are based on the government's delusions?

Not that I think of it, kind of ironic, isn't it?

Thailand can be the new 'hub' of male suicides online, OR, it can have one of it's 'crackdowns' on posting suicides online.

If someone wants to kill themselves and post it online then that's up to them. It's not like can be fined or put in prison after it!

If other people copy it, also up to them. Why hide this stuff from the population.  If people are so shocked and upset about someone killing themselves, then perhaps that is a good thing and will make them do something to help other human beings, rather than living in some dream world where this sort of thing never happens and only cute kitten and puppy videos are on line.

Looking at load Thai females have/carry in this society one would wonder when or where they would find the time.

Are suicides in general increasing or is it only the live streaming?

You ask a good question. As this is Thailand the land of tourism one wonders if there is an ulterior motive behind the gentleman's comments.

I don't think streaming is such a bad idea, so it can be established quickly and reliably it was really a suicide and not an 'assisted fall off the 24th floor balcony'
