If you value your life, forget the government hospitals.

The private ones are good value.

Room charge with meals, less than a reasonable hotel!!

I'd say take all precautions you can, and don't trust any doctor, at first. I've had bad experiences on Samui, including an operation at the govt hospital by a drunk doctor...I had no choice at the time

Good health care in Thailand is hit or miss. Nice clean hospitals are great, but in no way are any guarantee of competent staff, including doctors...Plenty of horror stories still happening in Thailand. Better than before, but still not good enough, in my experience.

I agree totally Ajarn.

Watch like a hawk, even in the private sector.

My nephew has been bitten by a dog.

He has started the rabies injection, and the

wound needs dressing each day.

2 days in a row the bill was 120 baht,

today they wanted 204 baht.

Now I know that is small money in real terms,

but I questioned the 60% rise.

It turned out that the nurse had used more lint and cotton wool

today...........

Well she can be wasteful with her money, not mine!!

Next time I shall be watching for wasteful use of resources!!

I sincerely hope that will be your worst experience with Thai medical care :o

I recently went to the new international hospital by

tesco lotus. They had a promotion on last month.

For 450 bht you get a general check up.

They took my blood pressure, then weighed and measured me.

They took my urine and blood and tested for cholestral etc.

Finally they x-rayed my chest to see if my lungs and heart

were healthy.

Doctor said come back in 2 hours, and he gave me the all clear!

Not bad I think :o

I have a somewhat jaundiced view of Samui hospitals although I believed the new Bangkok Hospital is good.

Bandon has long been known as pretty useless went there for a check up and that persuaded me the rumours where true. I think I got a first year med student! They only get patient because sontow drivers etc. are paid to bring in accident victims.

Have been in Samui international twice as an inpatient and many times as an out patient> I though quite okay, but all my out patients visits failed to tell me that I need urgent treatment on my foot. All my friends know that I was in and out 2/3 times a week. When things did not get better went to Bumungrad. They solved the problem: I now have no foot: thanks to Samui International.

So be very careful who and where you go: as until very recently there were not many options. The big problem has been heart attacks: there were no facilities on the island and I know at least one person who died because of that, and the refusal of Bangkok air to let in a medevac aircraft until after regular flying had finished!
