current requirements for work permit application for front of house/restaurant style jobs

Featured Replies

Hallo TV,

First time I post. I need to get some up to date information about application for WP please. Samui area. I understand I need to get letter of approval before going to apply for non b visa, then applying for WP in the time I return before single entry non b visa expires. Then maybe WP will be available to me and can work. I am unsure of the exact requirements for someone looking to work in a front of house/ restaurant capacity. I have job available if i get this WP approved (and firstly correct Visa) I have been in LOS for a few years already, had tourist and ED visas etc. Now looking to accept a front of house position in a small restaurant. Before in Europe I was in business in a separate field for over a decade. I do not have a degree or any education paper for hospitality style work. I do have hands on, informal experience over the years.

To start the lodging of the WP to the ministry of labour ( to get the approval / letter of invitation from MoL to take for the non b application) my agent has asked for me to give a resume and any education paperwork degrees to assist. For a job which involve serve the customers, making drinks and checking bills, do i need to have a degree? and also, I have not needed a resume in 15 years, i ran my own business (but not restaurant). Does every WP application need degree and qualifications??

Please help me to understand what will be the requirement, I cannot find a real life response to what is really needed for first get letter for invitation from ministry, and then to get non b visa so can complete application for WP when come back into LOS.

Thanks in advance

anyone have any knowledge they can share?

You can only be a manager so the job description must be fitting. Being very visible you could be easily caught if you do hands on things which aren't managerial.

Have you checked to confirm you are allowed do the job are you wanting to do. See: http://thailawonline.com/en/others/labour-law/forbidden-occupations-for-foreigners-jobs.html

A degree is not required to get a work permit but you must qualify for it. This form can be completed instead of submitting the degrees. https://www.doe.go.th/prd/assets/upload/files/alien_th/4bbf950cc7651c68d3e7a505617593a7.pdf

I dont know too much about this but what i know is yes they want to see your qualified for the job and also they want to know why they choose you instead of a thai citizen.

About resume. Im sure you can create one based on your origin of country. Just put some of your friends number.

There are lot of illegal waitresses from vietnam or myanmar at the restaurants or bars. They dont have any work permit. Just staying here using this ASEAN thing. Funny part is immigration police is their best customers. So i believe its not a big problem unless they really really want to catch you.

Plus i know many farangs working on tourist visa.

But im not sure your also aware that now you have to get a criminal check from your country too to get non b. This is for sure outside of thailand. Not sure if your in thailand

Thankyou ubonjoe and fritssikkink for your information. In the prohibited jobs link, front of shop sales sounds like its the only position close to the job position offered. A friend of mine has a WP as a front of house in different place, maybe its also labelled as manager- I'm not sure. what works for her may not work for me i understand. I do see foreign people in what looks like front of house jobs (serving customers etc), so I wonder .Great to know degree may not be necessary, thanks for the link to the qualification letter UJ. I never knew about this.

I have another question if this is possible to answer? The WP is held under a friends company at a different location than the restaurant. Company is long established over 10 years and has 2 x WPs. The company would be adding the restaurant address to their list of locations/branches to allow me one of their WP. But the job location it is not the companies actual business. It is thai owned by mutual friend-no comany. Can a WP that is available within a company, be issued if the staff works somewhere else? the address on the WP book would be the address of the restaurant.

Many thanks in advance for your insight so far

I believe you must be at the place where ever your wp says. Theres a section describes your work, type of work and location.

If they check and your not at that location wp says on it and not doing the work says on it. You might be in trouble. I would ask this to wp office

It will be tricky and depends on what sort of company your friend has. He needs to supply all sort of papers and give a reason why he needs to hire you. If your job isn't related to the company's work this is 1 issue. Another issue can be that the restaurant which will be a branch that doesn't show up in your friends legal and tax papers amongst others. The restaurant you will work for doesn't have a company so how is he going to pay you and the social security legally?

Also does the company has permission to hire foreigner
