Lost passport in Hong kong

Featured Replies

Oh dear my UK passport with multiple entry Thai visa gone missing. Will have to get temp UK travel document then try for tourist visa from Thai consul ate. Will I be able to convert this to retire ment visa in Thailand or what is the process

Can't you get a new passport in HK.

I don't know, I am asking for info as well.

Be sure you get a police report for the lost passport before apply for the emergency travel document. Info here: https://www.gov.uk/emergency-travel-document

You would not need to get a tourist visa in Hong Kong after getting the ETD you could get a visa exempt entry when you enter the country.

What exactly did you have before losing your passport? Did you have a valid visa or an extension of stay from immigration?

Not unless he wants to wait up to 6 weeks after applying online.

Thanks.

Wasn't sure if it was the same system as here in Thailand.

Having used an emergency travel document to return to Thailand, ensure you immediately start the process of getting a proper replacement passport. The emergency travel document is not a good substitute. There are more restrictions than just the validity period.

Your ETD will specify the journey you intend to make and for mine I had to produce evidence of flight bookings. Once that journey is completed you require a new ETD.

Not sure if you can add more journeys to it but obviously you would have to pay a fee for that at the embassy.

I think embassies have a lot of latitude in determining the restrictions on an ETD. However, you are correct that they want to see clear evidence of the way it will be used, and be satisfied  that waiting for a normal passport replacement is not a viable alternative. As you say. It very often translates into the ETD being valid only for home country and the countries associated with a single journey.

Sorry for delay I have visa extension (6 years) based on work permit (o visa which Thai consulate hk queried - no wife). But this year was planning to convert to retirement at end of May. I guess the real question is do I need to get a Thai visa before entry with the temp travel doc. The UK embassy offered the doc to include Thailand as a stopover enroute to UK. Also if I enter Thailand on tourist visa can I convert that to a retirement if I get a new passport in Thailand (I meet all requirements for retirement visa and have lease for land where my house is.

You might want to try and get a single entry non-o visa for being 50 or over.  That would allow a 90 day entry that you can extend based upon retirement. If not then a single entry tourist visa would be a good option. Either one would give you time to get a new passport.

Have you reported it to any police station in hk? Do you know where you lost it? They are quite friendly with these things and someone will return it to the police and they will call you if you report it and they get it back. Off course you don't know when this might happen.

I lost my cellphone on a hk bus I think and got it back a few weeks later!

All reported to police and have Doc's required . No return yet check every other day at police station. Ubon - you say get a non o but the hk girl at the Thai Embassy queried my non o (I have scanned copies on my tablet) on the grounds I didn't have a wife?

Sorry for delay two national holidays over here this week. Thai consulate only gave tourist visa received today - what's the max stay I can get with this? And can I get that extended and or converted to retirement visa? Thanks

The tourist visa gives you an initial 60-day stay which can be extended once for an extra 30 days.

A conversion to a Non Imm O entry is possible inside Thailand. Not all immigration offices can handle this, and it may be necessary to do it in Bangkok (two visits, 15 days apart).

Finally back in Korat. I have 60 day tourist visa. Can I ask for a 30 day extension now or do I have to wait until it has nearly expired?

You generally must wait until the last week or two of your 60-day stay (depending on the immigration office used). It probably anyway makes sense to wait until you have your new passport (you are urgently applying for one right?) to get it done. You can then combine transferring across of the stamps with getting the extension in one visit to immigration.

Thanks,

Plan to start the process today - plan to visit my local immigration tomorrow to see what they have to say (I have been extending there for 6 years).  Looking at the UK gov website seems I have to supply a countersigned photo etc. Also I suspect this is a very busy time of year for UK passport applications in the UK (summer hols coming up). I have some concerns about the time frame - Is it possible to use a fast service like you can when you apply in the UK?

Hello - one more question

New passport applied for. Do I need to do anything with Thai immigration to advise them about the lost passport containing my O visa?

Before you apply for a non immigrant visa so you can apply for an extension they will transfer the stamps from your ETD to your new passport.

Anyone know the process for passport application through VFS - I applied 15th May, today I received a sms from DHL saying that the new passport had been delivered to Trendy building (VFS). Is that it can I go and collect or do I have to wait for VFS to contact me?
