A large collection of old guns and bullets has been found buried underground at a farm in Kampong Speu province. Phnom Srouch district deputy police chief Sous Un said the farmer made the find as he was ploughing his land.

“There were 253 bullets and several guns including a 12.7 mm machine gun, three B-14s, two B40s, one CKC, one M16 plus one walkie-talkie,” he said adding that the entire haul was too old to be usable and had already been removed by the Cambodian Mine Action Centre. “I don’t know exactly how long it had all been there but it was a long time and none if it would work anymore,” he said.

CMAC director-general Heng Ratana said relics of war remained hidden all over the country — in the cities, countryside, on the ground, under the ground, on top of mountains and under water. “It will take many years before Cambodians can live safely without fear of landmines and explosive remnants of war,” Mr Ratana said. “We must work hard to clear these hidden killers in order to ensure that our next generations can enjoy peaceful lives.”
