Sugar prices to float late this year

BANGKOK, 2 May 2017 (NNT) - The Office of the Cane and Sugar Board will let sugar prices float in December this year whereas sugar prices in the global market remain relatively stable.

Secretary-General of the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board Somsak Jantararoungtong said the plan to float sugar prices will be clearer in October and will be implemented in December.

The move was endorsed after Brazil had threatened to file a lawsuit against Thailand at World Trade Organization. Brazil has claimed that Thailand’s sugar subsidy program is crashing the global market.

Consumers will be slightly affected by the decision, said Somsak, because global prices have remained somewhat stable. Legal amendments are now underway to facilitate the floating price policy.

Depends if you're a buyer or seller. Down for the farmer and up for the consumer.

Let the hoarding begin.
