Trump declares ‘economic D-Day’ as pressure on Iran reaches new level

Donald Trump has announced what he calls the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER” against Iran, threatening countries and companies that continue to provide Tehran with financial or commercial lifelines as the battle over the Strait of Hormuz enters a new phase.

The president said the United States would launch “economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale”, targeting everything from Iranian oil smuggling and cash transfers to exchange houses, ship registries and front companies.

His message to those still doing business with Iran was blunt: “It all needs to stop NOW.”

Economic warfare

Trump has ordered Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to apply what he described as maximum economic pressure on the Iranian regime.

Bessent said the campaign would combine unprecedented economic isolation with continued enforcement of the US naval blockade, aimed at preventing goods and vessels from moving in or out of Iranian ports.

Trump described the operation as an “ECONOMIC D-DAY” and called on US allies to join Washington in isolating and defeating what he called the Iranian threat.

The escalation comes as diplomatic efforts continue over reopening the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy routes.

Hormuz remains the pressure point

The waterway has been effectively closed since early March, sending shockwaves through global energy markets and forcing shipping companies to avoid the region.

There are signs of limited movement. Ship-tracking data showed 12 successful crossings on Monday and another 10 on Tuesday.

But those numbers remain dramatically below pre-war traffic, meaning the strait is nowhere close to normal operation.

For Washington, keeping the pressure on the waterway provides another weapon against Tehran while negotiations over reopening it continue.

Pressure spreads across the Gulf

The economic campaign is also beginning to affect Iran's neighbours.

The United Arab Emirates announced that it would cut off trade with Iran after Iranian forces fired two missiles towards the Gulf state.

Trump has meanwhile threatened Oman over its role in negotiations, warning Muscat against getting in the way of US efforts to reopen the strait.

The president has also floated the extraordinary idea of declaring the Strait of Hormuz US territory, despite the waterway's complicated international status and the fact that Iran and Oman share jurisdiction over it.

Tehran faces a tightening noose

The latest announcement suggests Washington is no longer relying solely on military force to pressure Iran.

The objective is increasingly clear: strangle Tehran economically, restrict its ability to trade and prevent other countries from providing a financial escape route.

Whether that forces Iran to compromise or instead hardens its resistance remains to be seen.

But with the Strait of Hormuz still largely closed, sanctions tightening and Washington threatening anyone who helps Tehran, Trump's promised “economic D-Day” could become one of the most consequential phases of the conflict yet.
