Thai Passport Renewal in Australia

Featured Replies

Living in Darwin, it's a long way from the other cities. Is it possible to renew Thai passport by mail?

As far as I know, Thai passports always have to be renewed in person--they want to get your fingerprints every time. You might check to see if the mobile consular service is going to be in your area though (http://canberra.thaiembassy.org/Home/mobileconsular)

I think you are right. I renewed my Thai passport in the Sydney consulate - they fingerprinted me and took a photo.

The only hope the OP has is if they let you do it at a local police station - knowing Thai bureaucracy that may be a long shot. Best thing would be to call them and ask.

Quite certain you have to go in person.

I never noticed that Thai people in Germany could do it by mail.

Like other countries Thailand takes photo (and fingerprint and probably signature) at the passport office.

No sending in of "witnessed" photos like UK (which stunned me in the times of biometry hype).

The US still lets people renew their passport by mail (in fact, they seem to strongly discourage renewing in person if you're eligible to renew by mail). You can even take your own picture and print it yourself (as long as it's a suitably high-quality photo). I guess they just compare the new picture with the one in the previous passport, and if it appears to be of the same person, that's good enough. However, fingerprints aren't required for US passports--perhaps if the US starts requiring that, renewals will need to be done in person. (I hear the US "Next Generation" passport is in the works, but I don't know what's changing; I saw some news articles saying it was going to be announced last year, but now it seems to be towards the end of this year. My US passport expires in 3 months, so I couldn't wait for the redesign; I mailed in my renewal last week.)

(Edit to clarify: you can renew a US passport by mail while in the US; I don't have any idea about renewing a US passport while in Thailand)

It has to be done in person at the embassy in Bangkok or the consulate in Chiang Mai or at one of the outreaches.

Thanks all for the replies. From the Thai Embassy in Canberra, My wife and child have to appear in person at Canberra or Sydney consulate. Quite a trip from Darwin. Almost as cheap to fly to BKK which is what we might do.
