Tourism Ministry pushing 6 premium rice strains in line with PM's wishes

BANGKOK, 18 May 2017 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has adamantly encouraged 6 premium strains of Thai rice be served to visiting foreigners to promote Thai grains while voicing hope Thai street food can be elevated as a tourist attraction.

Minister of Tourism and Sports Kobkorn Wattanvrangkul revealed that her office is preparing to exercise a civil-state mechanism to place 6 premium Thai rice strains in 5 star hotels and restaurants so that they may be introduced to foreign visitors, especially Chinese and ASEAN tourists who consume rice as a staple. The aim is to increase international demand for Thai rice with a target of 35-40 percent growth in food spending, or up to 30 percent spending by tourists in the country within 2018.

Among the strains are popular varieties such as Rice Berry and Tung Kula Rong Hai Jasmine rice. So far, hotels such as Dusit Thani Bangkok have already begun cooperating with the effort.

The announcement comes after Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha stated during a Cabinet meeting that he wants Thai food to be more recognizable globally and for it to pivot off its strength in street food. He asked that the quality of roadside vendors be approved not only in Bangkok but nationwide and for all Thai food to be promoted to attract tourists.

Now that is what I call a Hub thinker. Rice on the money.

So TAT has invented another doozy. Special rice to sell and promote as street food on all the street food outlets that are to be shut  and removed to improve walkway access for pedestrians.
