US linked to colour revolt

Featured Replies

A SENIOR CPP figure has accused the United States of being behind the opposition Black Monday campaign, whose activists he said are trying to start a “colour revolution” in the country. CPP lawmaker spokesman Chheang Vun yesterday gave a three-hour presentation on the topic at the National Assembly, giving examples of how uprisings had damaged countries including Iran, Libya, Syria, Egypt and Pakistan.

He accused several US organisations of supporting a colour revolution including the National Endowment for Democracy, the National Democratic Institute, Freedom House, the Open Society Institute and USAID. Mr Vun said those calling for a colour revolution wanted to take power for themselves, did not respect election results and sought to topple the legal government.

He said the Black Monday campaign was the beginning of a colour revolution, but vowed the government would not allow another uprising in the country. Jay R Raman, public affairs officer at the US Embassy, said he could not comment on Mr Vun’s speech, because the US government does not get involved in Cambodian party politics.
