New haul adds to fake cosmetics mountain

Featured Replies

A TRADER arrested in Phnom Penh for importing and selling fake cosmetics was holding even more counterfeit products than first estimated by authorities. According to the Interior Ministry’s Counter Counterfeit Committee, 42-year-old Him Touch was found in possession of more than 30 tonnes of fake cosmetics consisting of 50 different products from whitening creams to hair dyes.

Authorities initially told reporters on Monday that Mr Touch was found with only 20 tonnes of products. “His property was full of counterfeit products which they had packaged themselves. Our experts requested an order from prosecutors to take a sample of each product in order to check it,” the committee’s deputy secretariat Brigadier General Touch Yuthea said.

“There are many chemical substances that are not allowed in cosmetics because they may adversely affect the skin, hair and a person’s overall health. So it’s completely illegal,” he said. Until further tests are run, it remains unclear if the confiscated products are harmful to consumers’ health. Any product brought into Cambodia without government approval is deemed as “counterfeit”, a ministry official said.
