at this time of year i get really bad allergies, though i can not figure out to what. it's only at night. i sneeze uncontrollably and my eyes itch and swell up until i take an antihistamine and it kicks in. does anyone know what the trigger might be in this season? it might have to do with people around me constantly burning stuff (trash, leaves and other debris). but they do it all year round.... i have never before in my life had any allergies like this. other than cleaning my house and airing my bedsheets in the sun, etc. i am not sure what to do! i have been popping chlorophe (an antihistamine from 7-11 that comes in a yellow package) but have become concerned as it makes me feel weird and my pupils are unevenly dilated the next day. tips?

We can classify Antihistamine to 3 groups

1) First generation/ Sedating Antihistamine >> as Chlophenilamine / Hydroxyzine etc

there are several side effects as CNS suppression , dry throat and etc

it makes me feel weird and my pupils are unevenly dilated the next day. tips?

2) Second generation /Nonsedating Antihistamines >> as Terfenadine / Astemizole / Lolatadine etc

It needs to be matabolized at liver for having actived from .

3)Third generation >> as Fexofenadine / Certizine

this group is better than the 2nd , lesser side effects but more expensive

To what are you exposed only at night? And is it only at night, or only in bed? Is it a location or a time?

My first suggestion is to sleep elsewhere a couple of night (if it is, indeed, only in your bed) and see if it helps at all. If it does, my second suggestion is to replace your bedding, then your pillows and mattress pad, and if that doesn't work your mattress.

If it is a time, find out what is happening in your environment at that time. Is the neighbor burning the equivalent of poison ivy to your allergic system? Are you burning a mosquito coil outside your window? Spraying the window screens with mosquito spray? Are your windows open now and closed the rest of the year? Do you usually run A/C, which filters a lot of allergens in the air, but you are not using it this time of year?

Unfortunately, it's just that time of the year. I, too, have severe seasonal allergies. Two years ago, when the allergy specialists at various hospitals, couldn't provide much relief, much less any explanations, I started to track my antihistamine intake vs severity of symptoms vs time (hr/day/month), and found it to be very seasonal. These could be due to mold (during the rainy season), or pollen and smoke (as of the end of the year), and whatever else most of the time (detergents, food, mites, whatever). You can't fight them all, especially at 3:00 am when it hits me.

My suggestions:

1. Take the medicines that Bambina suggested (#3), regularly at bedtime, even if you don't feel you have an attack coming up. You could experiment with various formulations in #1 and #2 because it's decidedly personal.

2. You could also try Nasonex, a nasal spray you use once a day. It shrinks swollen nasal cavities and lets you breathe easier. It's also expensive. A far better homemade remedy is saline nasal irrigation, popularly called neti (Google allergy neti). I use a tiny Chinese teapot with salt water every morning; my three-year-old gets the same treatment with a plastic syringe. It's helped me cut down on the antihistamines. It may gross you out initially to do it, but over time I've become a firm believer.

3. I've had a few allergy skin tests done (and so has my baby), to determine what we are allergic to and it's a joke. I stuck through the allergy shots, and found temporary relief -- which now, in hindsight, turned out to be seasonal relief. Also, each time you have it done, you show symptoms of new allergic reactions, and the treatment (the shots) change. You have to very careful of the skin tests and the shots because they are not localized to Thailand, but come from the US, Germany or Switzerland, and in most cases are not very meaningful.

Save yourself some money -- the specialists will ultimately prescribe the drugs that Bambina suggested as "longterm maintenance."

Goodluck.

it is only at night, like talatnat says 3am is the prime time for me... and it does seem to have to do with my bed or something around. also i have puppies, and after i pick them up and cuddle them my neck, throat, eyes, everything itch so it could have to do with them as well. there is also my neighbors burning everything under the sun at all hours around my house, and the fact that with holiday parties recently i have been smoking a bit (a nasty, horrible habit). i really can't seem to isolate which it is but plan to get new bedding and do a thorough house and puppy cleaning. other than that i am taking zyrtec at night before bed as talatnat says, which seems to really help.

cold of the winter night might aggravate your symptoms.

cut as well on all dairy products and bananas and any other foods producing mucus and those you are allergic to, cigarettes, alcohol - drink a lot of plain water (to detoxify your body) and help your immune system as well as vitamins.

check if you have a flower/plant in the room or outside the window which might pollinate this time of year
