Sixteen Cambodians were arrested on Monday for illegally crossing the border to log luxury rosewood trees in Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province. The men, aged between 16 and 55, were all residents of Battambang province. They were arrested in Pang Sida National Park with logging tools and a rifle.

“All were detained at the Sa Kaeo provincial prison after questioning,” the Cambodian Foreign Affairs Ministry said.   Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said Thai park rangers initially apprehended about 21 Cambodian men, but five fled.

“The case is being treated as illegal logging with aggravating circumstances, because the loggers had an illegal weapon,” Mr Sounry said. He said the ministry had ordered consulate officials in Sa Kaeo to appoint lawyers to defend the men in court.
