December 27, 200619 yr Any regulars that take this route Loei to Khon Kaen, it looks like a 2 hour car drive on the map, is that about right? Thank you G'day, I have done that trip quite a few times and it takes 2 to 2 1/2 hrs, Chump Phae is a good place for a smoko stop. Pretty good roads all the way except for 20kms each side of Chump Phae where there is a bit of congestion. When you turn right onto the Loei Hwy (Nth) keep in your left hand lane for a few kms as the local boys in brown like to cash in every few days near the army barracks on the "keep to left" rule. Andy
December 27, 200619 yr I just made that trip by minibus and would allow nearer 3 hours for it, unless you want to play chicken with oncoming traffic as you try to pass the numerous sugar cane trucks using it or do it in middle of night when there's slightly less traffic about. Can also recommedn breakign up your journey and adding another hour on if you are douing it in late afternoon, by taking a detour into Phu Pha Man district to the bat cave at the foot of the limestone mountains there. If you hit it at about 5.15-5.45 pm, you'll be treated to an incredible sight as the millions of bats leave their cave for the nights hunting foray. Truly amazing as the sun's setting and they stream out like a swarm of bees!
