May 29, 20179 yr Hi ,Been told (by bar financial wizard) that expats cannot get overdraft/bank loan /credit card facilities in LOS. Is this correct? Sent from my SM-G935F using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app

May 29, 20179 yr A working expat can certainly get a car loan and credit cards without any additional security. Non-working expats can get a car loan with a Thai guarantor and credit cards with a security deposit held by the bank.

As a retired farang i got a car loan without any problem no thai guarantee needed. I have a credit card but obtained it whilst working no security deposit required then.

And add my friend has credit cards obtained while he was working, and using them well they have increased his line of credit to 1MB total among the 3 cards. Overdraft for personal use... I have never seen. We have it for company accounts. Car loan can be got with good credit and this is because the fina ce company doing this has its own criteria. Like the few company doing loans to foreigner working long time with high salary who can get loan to buy condo, and enjoy 7% interest and for short duration only.
May 30, 20179 yr I think it's all pretty much hit and miss, as a retiree I had no problem getting a loan for a car without any guarantor, likewise I applied for an Amex Credit Card, following a mail shot, and was issued with one without any sort of deposit, not sure if I slipped through the net but they've since increased my limit, they're fully aware I've never worked in Thailand. theoldgit

I got 2 credit cards from K Bank without even asking for them (never activated them). It is not even my main.bank, only keep a few thousand baht in it. I am retired here for over 16 years.
May 30, 20179 yr Hi-I have several million baht in accounts with Kasikorn-last week I asked if I could get a credit card-I'm retired here 7 years-never worked. They said yes- if you lodge 150,000 baht insurance for one year. I said no thanks.

If you have several million baht in accounts with Kasikorn why wouldn't you agree to lock 150,000 baht away for the convenience of a Credit Card? (sometimes more than a Debit card is required). Could it be you made an emotional decision out of annoyance and irritation rather than one based purely on logic ? Ultimately, if it were your bank would you offer a foreigner who isn't working and has no local ties a line of credit ? Edited May 30, 20179 yr by richard_smith237

Typically in Thailand each office has their own rules.

Quote buying flight tickets online - Debit card or renting a car - don't - or don't you do any of these? Cheers I've had issues using Debit Cards when attempting to book a flight online and over the phone. Some Airlines would only accept a Credit Card. Cash only at hotels ?.... I'd find it quite impossible to travel anywhere without credit cards. It may be relatively simple in Thailand by paying in advance and leaving a cash deposit, but internationally? How can you book a room?
May 31, 20179 yr To ID 13-Point1/150,000 was insurance not security deposit-money gone. I have a Visa credit card with my oz bank. Point2/ I was neither irritated or annoyed-it gets you nowhere here. Point3/ As for no ties, I have a fully paid for house,a Thai wife and family and the bank is aware of that. Thanks for your input, misguided as it maybe.

Never had an issue using HSBC debit card to book a flight inline. Hotels, usually go on spec and pay cash upfront on check-in, although last visit to BKK secured booking using debit card. Haven't had a personal credit card for getting on for 20 years. Don't buy goods online, accounts bills, etc settled with online banking.
