Four Cambodia fishermen who were held hostage for four years by Somali pirates have each received $3,700 compensation from the owner of the fishing vessel they were working on before they were kidnapped.  Caritas Cambodia, the group that facilitated their release, on Tuesday held a meeting with the victims and handed over the money.

The Cambodians, who were rescued last September, are Ngem Soksan, Em Phumphany, Nou Bori and Kim Kemheng from Kampong Chhnang and Kratie provinces.  The Taiwanese owners of the Omani-flagged Naham 3 vessel paid the victims $150 for each of the 18 months they were working on the vessel, before it was hijacked by pirates, which totalled $2,700 per person.

The company also paid them each an additional $1,000 as “encouragement”, bringing the total compensation amount to $3,700.  “There will also be compensation from the recruitment company, but the firm is still engaged in a court case so we have yet to receive it,” Caritas Cambodia executive director Kim Rattana said.
