I am on a valid retirement extension. I went to China for a weekend with re - entry permit 2 weeks ago. Will I need to go to immigration to report my return now, or I can wait to my next 90 days show up? Thank you.

That depends upon the office you  report to. 

Your 90 day report will due 90 days from the date you entered the country including that day in the count.

Mine told me to check in after returning to country and show my rentry permit.

am Positive you are correct; and this attribute will continue to muck down the immigration system here; the confusion will never end

They only reason to report would be to do a new TM30 form after you return. That is what some offices want a person to do.
