Chiang Khong border?

Featured Replies

I need another ~3 weeks before my plane leaves so I'm planning a land border crossing in Chiang Kong because last year I was turned away from Mae Sai (I was told the burma border crossings don't allow this anymore) . My tourist visa expired last month and my 30 day extension is up on the 9th.

What is the border crossing there like? I don't suspect it's easy like Mae Sai is but is it a big hassle like Vientiane where you need to buy a visa and take buses etc...? I'm in Chiang Mai and this is the easiest way to get another 3 weeks as far as I know. I don't want to stay in Laos, just in and out as fast as possible.

Thanks in advance.

Mae Sai is allowing crossings for a visa exempt entry now. Several reports about it since January.
Are you aware you can only do 2 of them per calendar year at land border crossings since 1 January.

Nice that's great news but I dearly wish they would keep a single policy long enough to plan around. Last year I got sent away and you in fact informed me they don't allow them anymore.  Yeah, my last one was 2 years ago now since I got turned away last year (I do one per year typically). Thanks again Joe.

Yep, just to confirm . Visa exempt stamps can be got at Maesai

Got one a few weeks ago

They started allowing them shortly after the 2 entry rule went into effect.

So I did indeed get through this time but they gave me 60 days for some reason (my visa was expired). Is this a mistake or did they change yet another rule and give 60 days 2x per calendar year?

It seems they made a mistake. You should of only gotten a 30 day entry. You should get the error fixed at a immigration office.

Nice mistake but I'm leaving the country going back home on July 1st so I won't stay even 30 days. Do I still need to get them to correct it? Going to CM immigration is a pain if it can be avoided.

I paid 500 baht and walked in and out, didn't take more than 15 minutes which was nice since it was an all day drive from and back to Chiang Mai.

Since you will be leaving within 30 days there is no need to have the error corrected at immigration.

Did mae sai border run and the exit out line#2 lady charged 100 bht for stamp out..said it's for passports photocopy ....
