Hundreds of people protested on Friday by blocking 28 Thai trucks on the Cambodian side of the Boeung Trakoun border market in Banteay Meanchey province after Thai authorities arrested 13 Cambodian workers. The incident in Thma Pouk district caused extensive traffic delays.

District police officer Liv Kun said the protest was an outcry against the detention of the Cambodians, who Thai authorities say were working illegally in Thailand’s Sakaeo province. He said the protesters became angry after Thai authorities refused to let the Cambodian workers return home, since they had only crossed into Thailand to work as day labourers.

“The protest was in response to the fact that Thai authorities arrested their friends and relatives,” Mr Kun said. He said Thai authorities were yet to release the Cambodians, while Thai trucks were still being stopped near the border checkpoint.
