EC working on 20-year national strategy

BANGKOK, 8 June 2017 (NNT) – The Election Commission (EC) has held a forum to hear opinions on its draft 20-year national strategy, which was drawn up with the intent to serve as a mechanism for democratic prosperity in the nation.

The forum, titled “20 Year Strategy: Every Voice Heard with Fairness Towards Quality Democracy” was opened by EC member Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, who stressed the need for the draft plan, saying the EC needs guidelines for the future that are in step with the government’s goals and attuned to present circumstances. He asserted that the current panel of commissioners will spend the remainder of their term pushing important works even if the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) tomorrow decides to reset the entire body.

He also commented on the EC’s review of stockholdings by nine cabinet ministers, assuring the act was not in retaliation over the possible resetting, but a necessity based on the commission’s duties, reminding that the final decision on the matter will be made by the Constitution Court.

On the 20-year national strategy, Somchai said its heart is to make polling the answer to national problems, for voting to be a mechanism for resolution. The plan is to achieve the goals through five strategies, which include organizing accessible polls through the use of innovations, legitimizing polls, and garnering public participation in the polls.

The EC is also to improve political parties so that they may serve as institutions of political strength.

If that's going to be anything like the 2017 Constitution Referendum vote, voting on national problems will be meaningless.

What a piss take.

More like a continuation of democratic recession, with the only prosperity being for those who are already in power.

The government seems to have some fixation with doing things that take 20 years (+). It all started when PM Prayuth announced he was going to fix corruption within 20 years. There have been more recent announcement that the government is going to do this or that in 20 like only the other day the PM made the prediction that he was going to make Thailand a food industry "superpower" in 20 years. I seem to recall Madame Tourism also predicted she would eliminated prostitution within 20 years.

It is usual for governments to only plan ahead for as long as their term in office.

With all these 20 year plans it is a sure sign this military government has a strategy to be around for another 20 years, or more.

I see 2 reasons for that. One reason is that they are unable to show any achievement on short term. It is easier to define long-term objectives for which they will not be held accountable. The other reason is that they need vague criteria on order to be able to oust a government they don't like.
