AYUTTHAYA: -- A woman narrowly escaped from her car moments before it was rammed by a passenger train in Ayutthaya early Wednesday.

Pol Capt Kittisak Udomsak, an officer on duty at the Phranakhon Si Ayutthaya police station, said the accident happened at 2.30am near Ban Ma railway station in Tambon Huntra in Pranakhon Si Ayutthaya district.

Kittisak said the driver, Pornphat Sakthong, 40, was slightly injured as she managed to get out of the car before it was hit by the Sila-art to Bangkok train.

The woman told police that she was returning home from visiting a relative in Ayutthaya when the accident occurred.

She said she accidentally hit a concrete barrier while she was making a U-turn and her car and the barrier fell onto the railway track as the train was approaching.

She said she managed to get out of her car moments before it was hit by the train.

Four wheels of the train’s front carriage were derailed in the collision and 50 passengers were later transferred to another train to Bangkok.

She appears to have been making a U-turn to the north of Ban Ma station, under a bridge carrying the Asia Highway.  There's no crossing there.  (The crossing is further south, south of Ban Ma station.)  In making the U-turn she came off the road, falling onto the track.

Making U-turn at a railway crossing. At 2 am with a train approaching. Absolutely brilliant!

One day in BKK my wife was driving our car and had to stop on the railway track...a man came knocking my window and asked if we could move a few meters more so he could close the barrier...a train was coming and he was in control of that barrier !

This was from Viphawadee road going onto Chaeng Wattanaa.
