MOTORWAY SCAM

Wassana Nanuam, Bangkok Post

The Transport Ministry plans to recruit former military conscripts as toll collectors to replace more than 100 Highways Department staff sacked this week over fraud.

Lt-Gen Preecha Premasawat, assistant chief-of-staff for civil affairs, said Deputy Transport Minister Pichet Sathirachawal had approached the army with this suggestion.

The minister believes conscripts who have had military training for 18 months will not engage in corruption.

Eleven assistant managers and 33 toll collectors of the Highways Department were transferred from the Bang Phli-Bang Pa-in and Bangkok-Chon Buri motorways to a section of

the Din Daeng-Don Muang tollway, which the department also operates.

The department had 220 temporary and permanent toll collectors at Bang Phli-Bang Pa-in and Bangkok-Chon Buri motorways and initial inquiries showed 114 of them were involved in toll fraud.

Soldiers started counting vehicles passing through the toll plazas on Monday. The mission will last a month.

Authorities will compare soldiers' tallies with tolls collected, then calculate past losses from the number of vehicles counted.

He's right. They are not corrupt. They go out and join two feuding security-guard companies, ending up throwing a hand-grenade in a crowded Lotus Srinakarin to make the other company lose face.
