Yesterday waiting to pay my overstay, there was an Indian guy on 9 months overstay. nobody of us was take in any kind of separate rooms: just after the immigration checkpoint we were there wait our turn. This indian guy didn't say nothing, but when the female officer said to him he will be  banned for one year and show his passport with the stamp he took out from a bag few papers stating that he has thai wife here with the kids. So this lady went upset and said to him why he doesnt tell before. After few seconds he took him in a private room: when out he sat near me and told him she asked him more 20.000 thb for cancel the stamp of the ban.

This is still Thailand?

Yes

I hope he had the money to give her/bribe her as it seems he got very lucky to avoid the 1 year ban.

He paid a total of 40.000: the os fine and the bribe for cancel the 1 year ban stamps

Nice to see this news. Shows the immigration people having a heart and being reasonable at times too. Seems a fair price for no ban and can be with his family

Interestingly enough, there are reports that some visa agents at land crossings can organize waiving of the ban for the same price.

I wonder whether the IO who helped him was helping for free, and the ultimate recipient of the bribe higher up the chain of command.

The way the Indian act its seems to be he doesn't really know about the ban. Someone can organize for lttle less and you even don't need move from home.

You think corruption is "nice"?

He should have thought of his family before overstaying.

Yes, he should have.  It is also likely not their fault - and likely his wish not to be separated from them - that he did.  Usually only the very wealthy can buy breaks like this - for example, in my passport-country - just hire the right lawyer.  When regular folks can buy breaks at prices they can afford (usually, just barely), only then, people call it a "corrupt country."
