I have thought about Kanchanaburi. Where would you recommend staying and what is the easiest way to get there? I don't have a vehicle.

Are you saying getting to Khao Yai is easy from some place else? Where?

We took the train to Kanchanburi.. a bit of an adventure but fun..  the floating resorts on the River Kwai Noi are very relaxing.. not cheap but worth shopping around.. a trip up the river in a long-tail boat is great.. beautiful scenery.. no roads along the river and some nice parks.. waterfalls into the river and small villages.. I'd like to go again..

Thanks for taking the time to reply. My experience w Thai trains has not been good. I wonder if a bus is better. I think vans go there too

Koh Chang is very chill, at least in the off season. You can catch a van to the ferry for 300b and then a songtaew from the other side of the ferry to White Sand Beach for 60b.

In terms of lodging, up to you. It was pretty sleepy there when I visited in mid-June with plenty of walk up vacancies for hotels on the street as well as beachfront bungalows.

Can you tell me any specific locations and hotels?

Google Khao Yai Hotels you find lots and lots of info, e.g. agoda, booking .com, Trip advicer and many others. Too many to write down.

For sure.. the train is old, not very comfortable.. and it rambles along.. but I enjoy the pace and being away from highways and traveling with the locals.. It isn't a long journey.. I can't remember just how long but 3 hours  +??... The bus would get you there quicker... and a van quicker still.. if you don't mind the risk of getting a crazy driver...

Thanks, will check it out.  Any specific place to stay?

Prices vary from 500 baht - 2500 baht. You can rent a bungalow, house or room, lots of options. You can walk the beach road in 20 mins., all rooms will be on that walk. Great mix of Thai, Chinese Thai, sea gypsy, Muslim and Falang. Very friendly town, food market every Sunday in middle of town.

Highly recommend Kanchanaburi.

You can get the train from Thonburi station (?), across the river in BKK. We took this option and loved it! We didn't do it for the comfort, we did it for the experience. I think it was just a little over 2 hours?

Spent 2 nights in Kanchanaburi.  It was enough for us, but wouldn't hesitate staying there 4 nights.

As we were happy to experience the Thai train system (3rd class), we just got a Minivan back to BKK.

We stayed here. Room was clean and the pool was essential to cool off. I'm sure there are cheaper / more expensive around, but this suited us just fine: https://www.tripadvisor.ie/Hotel_Review-g297924-d2540045-Reviews-Tara_Bed_Breakfast-Kanchanaburi_Kanchanaburi_Province.html
