Falangs/Expats are basically.....Old, Fat, Bald, Sweaty, Smelly, and Socially Unacceptable Mis-fit Cretins, most of which are drunks, and that are in Thailand to force themselves on young girls working in the bars?

Is this the general perception?

Ok, you guys are a riot. I have been on quite a few boards and this one is by far the most amusing. It seems as if most of the people on the board are actually educated. I know guys on the AC boards that probably can't spell their own names.

The perception of old, fat, sweaty, bald, and smelly definitely does not describe the expats I know who go to AC. Most of them are in their late 20's and early 30's, have money to blow. The girls in my bar seem to think any guy with any other color hair than black and any other eye color than black/brown is handsome.

I do have something funny that my friend and I were discussing the other day. Why do filipino girls want to be white and why do American women want to be brown? Is it the same way with Thai girls? I finally figured out the answer. No matter where they come from they will never be completely happy.

It still astounds me how we still make such a fuss over the whole issue of farangs and expats???? I mean of course there is a clear definition for the word farang being usually caucasians but why is it we're only fascinated with such demographics? I mean why don't we have topics regarding other expats, be it Japanese, Africans, etc.... just a general wonderment I guess.

But to shed light on the subject from a female perspective, I honestly believe that Thai girls look at foreigners as being a ray of hope you can say, someone that will support them unlike their Thai male counterparts which usually cannot grasp the idea of responsibility even at the age of 30 or even 40?? Sorry for the generalizations but this is from personal experience therefore reader discretion is advised…anyhoo talking about support, I don’t mean only financial aspects of it but also emotional. From my perspective I find that it's just not being with a farang that I find attractive, it's more of their way of thinking. I mean the person may not be a farang but may have grown up in the states, in the end I think we're all fascinated with the differences it brings to the relationship, the exchange of cultures and ideas, etc... Although I will not lie and admit that there are those types of thai girls that just want a farang for the sole reason of being able to be seen with a farang, but as I always say "to eachs own".

Face it, the real reason why we usually make a fuss about interracial unions is simply from selective cognition. There are hundreds of people we pass everyday in the streets of Bangkok but those that really stand out is a farang and a thai girl. We don’t want to admit that we’re intrigued to know how such a pairing had occurred and it’d be easier to assume that the farang is just another old, fat, sell out with a bar girl. Realistically and quite disturbing is that we’re more comfortable believing this scenario then anything else. But the truth is, not all farangs are as such and not all thai girls accompanying them are bar girls.

In the end it’s about two people that have a common interest to be in the company of each other, and whether there are hidden agendas from either one of them-aren’t those the risks you take in a relationships? There is no unconditional love, we are all on this earth to fulfill even the simplest of needs and to say that we’re not in it for at least something would probably be far from the truth.

Not sure if I just rambled a bunch of gurly crap but I hope some of it did make sense????

That's only half the truth you've found out. The perpetuation of that truth is ensured by the pumping-in of billions of dollars into the cosmetics industry commercials striving to make even more money by promising to make farang browner, and Asians whiter.

Just watch two hours of Thai TV and see how many times they advertise whitening cream and in overt or less overt ways equate "white" with "beautiful, modern, successful and sexy". Now, does anyone have any tips for how to get a piece of that business??

I may get jumped at for the following very general statements, and then so be it, but here are some other reasons why many Thai girls like (or think they might like) farang men:

1. The difference as such. We are all intrigued by what it is really LIKE to have sex with "THE OTHER".

2. Power. Caucasians still rule the world, if not geographically, then economically. Power attracts.

3. Good advertising (mainly courtesy of Hollywood). It seems not so few Thai girls believe that all farang men are as sweet and funny as Adam Sandler (not that I think he's that funny).

4. The size of the equipment. Popular Thai myth (?) has it that farang pack larger power tools than their Thai counterparts.

5. The promise (?) of a greater degree of equality in the relationship.

6. The prospect of going abroad and seeing new places/experiencing new things.

This is all generalist stuff though, and any girl entering into a real relationship with a farang man will soon see him as an individual more than "THE OTHER", so the novelty of some of the above will rub off, and the more realistic dynamics start.

This is certainly the case as where I live the Thai's biggest piece of equipment here is a Bosch hammer drill with a miniscule capacity of sds drill 13mm.

I on the other hand flash my Hilti TE 72 combined breaker and hammer drill with a cruciform bit capacity of 50mm, more if using a core drill.

Any wonder the girls all like me.

I have a high forehead but I'm not bald, I sweat a lot but I'm not smelly, I'm not fat but I eat a lot and I'm thirty but still look twenty five.
