Poll protesters face beatings

Featured Replies

Protesters against next year’s national election have been warned they will be beaten about the head with bamboo poles, the Social Affairs Minister says. Vong Sauth said the government had pledged to prevent any demonstrations.

He quoted comments Prime Minister Hun Sen made at an internal meeting of the ruling CPP. “The law has granted power to him,” Mr Sauth said at an event to promote officials. “And now he said that at this election if anyone dares to protest we surely will hit them on their head with bamboo. We won’t allow any more protests.

“We are following the law,” he added. “If someone does something illegal we have to arrest them and put them in prison.” He said the opposition party often accused the CPP, and especially Mr Hun Sen, of arbitrary actions.
