There was also a specific occasion some years ago when there was apparently a real shortage of white plates for some reason that escapes me.

Probably during the period where there was a massive recall of white plates due to faulty black paint that would eventually fade

I doubt the dealer can get old matey in the workshop the oil change monkey to drop spanners and punch some numbers into a "numberplate".

Some of the mechanics are very good. Not all obviously but putting a number plate together is not rocket science

What is the point of a red number plate? let the dealerships have a list of numbers they can use. The purchaser of a new car can then chose the number and have it made and fitted while they wait.

Seems a very antiquated system to issue a red number then get the proper number.

When I bought my first car here in 1998 I had to wait nearly 6 months for the "proper" number plate, but in my most recent purchase the standard plate was already fitted when we took delivery.

There seems to be a lot of confusion over these red plates. Nothing 6 or 7 committees and a few seafood buffet lunches can't sort out.

It's funny because it's true.

When i bought my car 5 years ago no plates provided, Drove for 3 months no problem. Then plates arrived. Never heard of anyone being prosecuted for NO plates ......... only if you loose one ........
