Can you run a a welder through an electric gate motor ?

To late know as i just noticed this meaning it would be going from the base of the motor through to the drive cog and onto the drive rail they are welding onto the gate

Where have they got the welder ground clip?

 

Anywhere other than on the gate they are working on is bad news.

 

Try that on our gates and their feet would not be touching the ground on their way out.

I can understand that

The ground clip was on the anchor bolt of the motor

works ok now but what about the long term 

Yup, the welding current passing through the tiny contact area of the bearings isn't going to increase their life.
